Ms Jenny's Corn Casserole

Thursday, September 9, 2010Jenny D's Corn Casserole

Most people cook to live. Ms Jenny lives to cook! In all the years of our friendship with her and her family she has totally enjoyed preparing dishes for family and friend get togethers! Here is one of them that I am adding to my newly organized Favorite Cookbook Recipes of Family and Friends.

LIVE TO TEACH LESSON #1

EVERYTHING WE NEEDED TO KNOW TO SUCCESSFULLY “LIVE TO TEACH” WE RECEIVED AT TOWSON STATE

LESSON #1: Take DR. BAREHAM Science Department

Thinking back I remembered …White jacket, maybe a bow tie, soft voice, hands-on experiments, quiet humor, student involvement. REAL mental connection with each student when talking and listening to them. And the most important: he seemed to really enjoy his area of subject matter.  And lo and behold Clair found a pic of him for me today and you can still see those qualities in his pic! I can’t find my year book right now so I really can’t wait to see the Memory Book!

One year while teaching at Neabsco Elementary in Dale City one of my past students who by then was working for the a/c maintenance department of our Prince William County Virginia came up and told me how much he had liked being in my class. At this point I was inwardly puffing up awaiting a heavy academic compliment and he said “Your glasses were cool. I used to like watching them darken when we went out for recess and then lighten when we came back in!” Ha! Ha! Poof went the puff! But for a long time after that ..it made me think..one of the many ways to connect with students was the "look" you created for your teacher image..like Dr. Bareham…check out his white jacket, cool hair, and an organized, interesting work area! How about that high tech science equipment back then!

Lesson learned: Use your looks, habits, organization and quality hands-on activities to leave your teacher footprints on the kids!

I remember student teaching in Lutherville and hearing that one of the master teachers there said no-no to student teachers having pony tails hair styles...and no-no to wearing flowery beige outfits..those teachers' beliefs made me want to leave my footprints elsewhere...but then I went down to the John & McMechan Streets school in Baltimore City to student teach my second 9 weeks and I taught under "Ms Polly" who had no desks...no graded readers...wore capes and boots..She would send me out to buy an aquarium and fish and set it up and see where it took us! So those two Towson experiences showed me what I wanted "not" to do and "what " to do. And years later when student teachers from Mary Washington College and other nearby colleges worked in my room I never forgot to guide them to what we learned in this Lesson #1!

Downsizer's Dilemma! What to Do with All the Family & Friends' Recipes????
THIS HAS BEEN DRIVING ME CRAZY FOR YEARS! TRIED TO MAKE MY OWN .... USING DATABASES AND SPREADSHEETS ...TOO MUCH TIME WASTED AND NOT ENOUGH PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE to pull it off to pull up what I want quickly and clearly. 68 years and 4 generations of recipes arrgghh.Bought a notebook recipe organizer but not big enough and not fast enough. So then I thought I will search online and I found what I thought was the ultimate online organizer. Slick presentation online! Expensive but I took the plunge and ordered it and some of their softwear. And then the UNEXPECTED ..it crashed! It took several days to get a response and several phonecalls. And it crashed/locked again!!! But that day their phone lady was off so several more days passed again. That was it! The end! Demanded my money back and several days later after calls, faxes and emails I was refunded the amount. Always nice, professional but the product didn't work on my sorta new 64 bit cool computer. IF I HAD GONE TO AMAZON and read the good and bad reviews of this product I would have saved myself lots of time and stress!!
And if you use the Amazon reviews you know you can pick up what others think works better than what you are considering buying. That happened . I downloaded the trial of the one others liked .. I love it!!!... less expensive...you can make your own cookbooks, it works with my computer, pictures are easy to add, tips, comments, procedures etc places on each recipe you can add! No phone service but so far online communication works well! 1/3 the price of the glitzy one that I purchased that presented well online but crashed and locked.
So if you feel you are drowning in index cards and cookbooks and newspaper clippings make the jump...design your own cookbooks...create your own chapers and insert the recipes you want to not downsize! Oh Yes! Oh Yes! It is scary getting rid of the original recipes! But liberating also! So where I confess I am still in the Baltimore Black Bag Brigade because I cannot shake black bags I have released myself from the Recipe Pile Platoon that never gets to use their recipes because there are too many and there is too little time to find what you want. Now .. it's click here and click there and pull it up and print out what you what in the size you want. Freedom!
Here's what one of my oldy ones looked like and it took lots of minutes just finding it. So I scanned the original (for memory's sake)..put it in the electronic with the new version.

So What's A Paper Email???

Everyone here reading right now has those special people we love who won't take a baby step into the online world! We love them so much and at the same time they drive us crazy keeping them current with the latest pics, news and other newsworthy stuff that we pop online in seconds to our online friends!

Fellow Downsizers...Here is the way to do it!
Buy my postcard notecards or make your own and send them on to a person to enjoy with you, instead of keeping them cramped up in boxes til you conk out or forget where they are.
The white envelope is about 5 1/4 inches by about 7 1/4 inches. On the front of the note card is the permanently attached vintage postcard. The second pic gives you a closeup of the permanently attached postcard.
In this case on the back of the notecard on an attached label is what was on the back of the postcard:
"Wild Bill Hickok's last poker hand, which was played August 2, 1876 at Deadwood,Dakota Territory is portrayed with wax figures at Southwestern Historical Wax Museum, Grand Prairie, Texas."
Inside the note card, it is blank for you to add your very own message you want instead of the dorky ones people get paid to write for the card companies. Go creative and enjoy! AND then type YOUR message to them (or cut and paste your online messages )on your computer..print it out, cut it out and tape it inside these creations and whala! Stick that stamp on the envelope and their address and send them their very own paper emails!
At the very least you communicated with them instead of putting it off because you are so busy. At the very most you get them closer to the enjoyment of the world of electronic emails/notes and cards which are so much fun!
Aha ..think I will call them paper emails...thoughts right now ...with messages for people too special to send electronically and/or for people who haven't moved into the electronic messaging era.,,

What My Mother Left Me

On a brutally windy cold day after a snow in Baltimore on January 24TH of 2004 we buried my mom. Only a few could even make it to the funeral because of the weather. But I will NEVER forget and will always be thankful to our church friends, forever friends and family who got there.
Many days/months/years  later last month I came across this paper in my Bible while getting ready for a Bible study.
Wow! I had written this the night before the funeral. We were so glad she was not suffering anymore but so empty without her here. I still will get the feel to call her on the phone but alas not for now is that possible!

Anyway I started thinking about these points on this pad and thought WOW! How true these thoughts still are! Two added explanations.:
.1. She would always say in her strong tone "Pull yourself together!" to people who felt they were falling apart emotionally ...physically...mentally...and Ha! Ha! they would!
2. We went to Branson when it was new and hot and crowded...we got a motel..out in the boondocks and laughed so hard we cried...from frustration...and fear of not having enough $$$. She in her words..said we are here ...let's go for it! not one show a day but two and sometimes three and we did and learned sometimes you just have to have fun and forget the fears!
3. Lots of people think of Forest Gump as retarded..but I saw him in the movie as a representation of our generation who was there..where the important times in our lives took place..and she was like that...ALWAYS THERE>..by phone....or visits when we needed her or were at important moments in our lives!

So Mom...we miss you...Happy Mother's Day... We are carrying on YOUR LIST!

Did You Ever Have One of These? Everbrook Made in USA???

When I found these in the Maryland estate I was so excited to see their condition! Called a Petite Pak Set by Everbrook. I loved writing with fountain pens way back when ...even if we got messy from them. Check out the pen and pencil... nice condition! If you look in the pic and see the clear piece protecting the case where you slide them in the case..that had a wear tear across that spot as shown in the pic. But other than that I don't even know if the pen was used. Ahhh takes me back in time to sitting at a wooden desk in rows. These desks had ink wells. Now THis kind of pen in this listing was high tech from those found in elementary classrooms in those gone by days! I bet the poor teachers from back then would have coronaries hearing the proposals to stop teaching cursive writing in elementary schools! I have mixed feelings about that and can't really decide how I feel.
Anyway, click here to check out this set:

Beatles, Vietnam, Fox Entertainment, Trump and Glenn Beck! Geez!

I think the world must be nearing its end when I find myself agreeing with Glenn Beck
....AND my guy Bob Dylan is featured in Aarp !!!
Geez!

But the beginning of this downfall was ALSO when:

1. The Beatles (what their song words taught all was "cool' to say and do and I love the Beatles music don't get me wrong) took over the music world.
2. The Viet Nam War (which brought home the pains of drugs to add to the alcoholism pains already killing family structure). Before that the only place in my little Baltimore world  I ever heard of drugs was Pratt Institute in NY!
3. ALONG WITH Fox Entertainment. I can still remember how classroom behavior changed as the  Fox entertainment  was born and grew through the years  and changed what was considered acceptable to say and do.in public.. Kids became shocked if they were reminded Fart and Ass were not acceptable classroom language.

And now we have my man Trump using  the even bigger F word over and over.
I don't care what he says and does in private. That's between him and God.

So you go Glenn Beck! Me agreeing with Glenn Beck? Scary but true!

God vs Science

God vs. Science

‘Let me explain the problem science has with religion.'

The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand. 'You're a Christian, aren't you, son?' 'Yes sir,' the student says. 'So you believe in God?''Absolutely.' 'Is God good?' 'Sure! God's good.' 'Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?' 'Yes' 'Are you good or evil?' 'The Bible says I'm evil.'

The professor grins knowingly. 'Aha! The Bible!' He considers for a moment. 'Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?' 'Yes sir, I would.' 'So you're good...!' 'I wouldn't say that.' 'But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't.'

The student does not answer, so the professor continues. 'He doesn't, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Can you answer that one?'

The student remains silent. 'No, you can't, can you?' the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax. 'Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?' 'Er..yes,' the student says. 'Is Satan good?' The student doesn't hesitate on this one. 'No.' 'Then where does Satan come from?' The student falters. 'From God' 'That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?' 'Yes, sir..' 'Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything, correct?'

'Yes' 'So, who created evil?' The professor continued, 'If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.'

Again, the student has no answer. 'Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?' The student squirms on his feet. 'Yes.'

'So who created them?' The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question. 'Who created them?' There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized. 'Tell me,' he continues onto another student. 'Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?' The student's voice betrays him and cracks. 'Yes, professor, I do.'

The old man stops pacing. 'Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?' 'No sir. I've never seen Him.'

'Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?' 'No, sir, I have not.' 'Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory

perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?' 'No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't.' 'Yet you still believe in him?' 'Yes' 'According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?' 'Nothing,' the student replies.. 'I only have my faith.' 'Yes, faith,' the professor repeats. 'And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith.'

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of His own. 'Professor, is there such thing as heat? ' 'Yes.' 'And is there such a thing as cold?' 'Yes, son, there's cold too.' 'No sir, there isn't.'

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain. 'You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit down to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.'

Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer. 'What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?' 'Yes,' the professor replies without hesitation. 'What is night if it isn't darkness?' 'You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?'

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester. 'So what point are you making, young man?' 'Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.'

The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. 'Flawed? Can you explain how?'

'You are working on the premise of duality,' the student explains. 'You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it. Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?' 'If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do.' 'Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?'

The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed. 'Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor,

are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?'

The class is in an uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.

'To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean.' The student looks around the room. 'Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?' The class breaks out into laughter. 'Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt the professor's brain,

touched or smelt the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir. So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?'

Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable. Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. 'I Guess you'll have to take them on faith.' 'Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life,' the student continues. 'Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?' Now uncertain, the professor responds, 'Of course, there is. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.'

To this the student replied, 'Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.'

The professor sat down.

ps: The student was Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein wrote a book titled 'God vs. Science' in 1921.

Ever Had A Little Red Scotty?

This little doggy came from a fellow downsizer downsizing years ago who had an Ebay lister list 50+ dogs as a lot that I bought. I only wanted one of them to give as a gift but fell in love with all of them and the info the lister gave me on the background saying they had been in the seller's  grandmother's restaurant in California in the 1950s. I have been selling them one by one from time to time. I only have 4 or 5 after this one.
